MEMORY COLLAPSE

PHOTOGRAPHER'S STUDIO / BALLARD NEIGHBORHOOD / SEATTLE, WA

Hiroshi Sugimoto's Theater series consists of 2-3 hour long exposures of film screens, each resulting in a light void that punches through the photo. Though each image shows layers and layers of time, the memory of the film remains and collapses the frame. In this space for a photographer, light wells serve to break down into the mass, with space and program collapse into the volume. While providing light to the more private spaces such as the studio, production, and offices, the wells are visible and experienced in the gallery - the main space. Rhythm of light and mass is felt proceeding through the gallery, steadily compressing, finally to be released for the special exhibition space. This area looks down into the archive - memory for all past exhibits, layered beneath the celebrated present.
